According to Wikipedia sustainability is: "in a general sense, is the capacity to maintain a certain process or state indefinitely." I would say that sustainability is just think that the resources are scanty and we need to plan how to you them in a way that we can make a better place for our kids and grand kids’ to live. So you can apply this concept in every thing that you do.
Recently the sustainability term became very fashionable. Although it is one of the most spoken words in the cooperative "world", we can see few companies really doing some thing, most of the companies just communicate them selves as sustainable to have a good image to consumers. But why does it happen, if the need of sustainability is already well known by the executives? According to Francisco Gracioso in his book Marketing Estrategico (Strategic Marketing) the time average that a CEO works in the same company is 5 years. And they feel pressured by shareholders to deliver results and not promises. So the most wanted ceo's are the ones that make the price of the company's stock go up next week, in other words they focus their efforts to plan in the short term over the long term. But the share holders have not seen yet that sustainability is the only way to obtain profits in the long term, otherwise there won't be no resources any more to keep their business. So this link between sustainability and profit must be displayed as a profitable strategy. And also it can be used to communicate a good image to consumers.
If they are taking some time to realized that what could us, the consumer, do? Every thing! We live in a cosumism time. People buy just for the pleasure of buying, even if they do not need it. But in my opinion we should consume more conscientiously. If most companies are profit oriented, and they make profit selling goods for us, we should start to buy only the sustainable choice. So if you want to buy a cookies pack, and you have two choices: one with regular packaging, and other with recycling packaging you should choose the second one.
It is up to us make this change! Lets make this planet a better place.
